In July of 1969, America sent the first humans to the moon. Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin, and Michael Collins were aboard the mission named Apollo 11.The launch vehicle they rode, the Saturn 5 rocket, is still the most powerful machine ever built. It generated almost 8 million pounds of thrust and even after nearly 40 years, it is the only vehicle that has carried men beyond earth's gravity.Watch it now, as you would have seen it on July 16, 1969, at 9:26 AM EDT. T-minus 00:5:59 and counting.

I won't be the same, but I do look forward to the planned new moon landings - finally, my generation has progressed to where you were in 1969. x)

Thank you ...and you're welcome.

Thank you SO MUCH for putting this up. My father made sure that I watched both the launch of Apollo 11 and also Neil Armstrong taking the first steps on the Moon. When Armstrong was going down the ladder, my father told me and my brother "Be sure you remember this moment because it's the most important thing that will happen in your lives".Thanks again jimnxsq for bringing a bit of my childhood back.

Yeah, I realize many, if not most, viewers aren't old enough to remember any of the great Apollo launches. Obviously, Apollo 11 was launched during the summer vacation and I watched the launch at home, but most of the others were launched during the school year and most school rooms nationwide would have a TV set in the room to watch all the live coverage. There was great drama for all missions because each was more dangerous than the missions that came before.

The awesome power of the Saturn 5,she had a thrust of over 7,500,000 pounds at liftoff. Here is another amazing fact. From engine ignition to before liftoff, she consumed 23 tons of fuel.
